ART SONGS FOR NEW BEGINNINGS BY DENISE RIVERA I have been asked to compose a 3-minute voice art song for an anthology of songs as an "answer to the canonical 24 Italian songs, but with a modern twist". This project is headed by Denise Rivera and will be published in early 2023. Updates are available on Facebook and Twitter under #ArtSongsForNewBeginnings The piece has two components - beginner (high voice) and advanced (baritone) Look for "Mountain Prairie" by Jessica McMann. The advanced version with piano will be available for sale spring 2026. Arrangement for orchestra available by special request.
AMANTI COMMISSION UREGINA I am composing a piece for student and teacher for Violin and Viola. This work is commissioned by the Amanti Foundation for the use of the 4 Amanti instruments in their collection. This work will premiere the fall of 2026.
ISLAND CHAMBER WINDS COMMISSION This commission is part of a consortium headed by Ben Litzcke of Island Chamber Winds. The final score will be for piece for wind dectet plus one pianist and one percussionist. Instrumentation may include doubling on piccolo, English horn, and/or bass clarinet. Percussion will be limited to portable instruments, since we're a touring ensemble. The piece will be approximately 10 minutes long. For more information please see this website. PIECE FOR HOOP DANCER AND ORCHESTRA I have received funding from Calgary Arts Development and Canada Council for the Arts, and Association of Canadian Women Composers to write and choreograph a new work for hoop dancer and orchestra. This grant includes orchestral writing mentorship as well as consultation sessions with other hoop dancers. This piece will premiere March 2027 with Allegra Chamber Orchestra in Vancouver and tour in Manitoba with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
This work will be available for performances/tour after the premiere.
Cognitive Dissonance This work for choir and soloist was commissioned by musica intima and was premiered August 3rd, 2024 at the Bill Reid Gallery. Cognitive Dissonance is the choral piece with a solo composed specifically for Jonathon Adams. Cognitive Dissonance is available for performances and choirs are encouraged to hire Jonathon Adams or commission me for a new solo line for a different Indigenous Vocalist.
NEW OPERA WITH DEANTHA EDMUNDS I have been commissioned to arrange an opera for Deantha Edmunds with support from Amplified Opera. This project is expected to finish over the next few years.
STORIES OF MY PEOPLE SUITE 12 mins I have received funding from Calgary Arts Development Original Peoples Investment Fund to compose new works for flute and piano. Stories Of My People includes 3 movements for Flute/Alto Flute and Piano. World Premier of 1. Winter Sorrows and Summer Flowers was on July 1st 2021 at the Pender Island Flute Retreat. Watch Here. The world premier of movement two was at the Valhalla School of Music in August 2021. Lauren Eselson performed both movements. The full suite was premiered in Halifax on June 29th, 2022. CECILIA CONCERTS; The Realities Which We Have Made 8 mins I am the inaugural composer-in-residence for Cecilia Concerts in Halifax, NS. The premier of my work The Realities We Have Made for Alto Flute, C Flute, Viola, and Piano was joined with Karen Shepherd and Beverly McKiver for a chamber music concert on June 29th, 2022. The River Has Many Ways of Being 9 mins This is a medium difficulty 6-movement piece for Flutist (Concert, Alto, and Bass) Viola and Piano. There are bowed piano sections that call for thick nylon guitar strings. This piece follows the river from a mountain spring to a wandering river upon the plains. Score is available.
RE:naissance OPERA: Blood, Fire, Flames 5 mins I was commissioned to write a new section for the Queen of Carthage, a new production from RE:OPERA and Early Music Vancouver. I contributed "Blood, Fire, Flames" for lyric soprano and baroque ensemble. CALGARY PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PROJECT: Muskwa's Mountain Home I was offered a commission to write a symphonic piece for a new series with Tom Jackson along with Jason Young and Sonny Ray Day Rider. This project was being mentored by Cris Derksen. This work also received performances by the Edmonton Symphony and Sinfonia Ancaster.
